Frequently Asked Questions

You’ll enjoy a scenic ocean cruise along Maui’s west coast, where you can spot humpback whales (December–April), Hawaiian green sea turtles, and vibrant coral reefs. Our tour combines whale watching and guided snorkeling at one of West Maui’s best reef locations, often near Lahaina, Kaanapali, or Honolua Bay.

The best time for whale watching in Maui is December through April, when thousands of North Pacific humpback whales migrate to Maui’s warm waters to mate and give birth. During this season, we are almost guaranteed to see it every day.

Yes! This is a combo whale watch and snorkel tour. After whale watching, guests can snorkel at a vibrant coral reef where they often see sea turtles, tropical fish, and colorful coral formations. Snorkel gear and flotation devices are included.

No experience is needed. Our professional guides provide easy instructions, flotation gear, and full assistance in the water, making it ideal for beginners, families, and kids.

Tours usually depart from Lahaina Harbor or Kaanapali Beach, depending on ocean conditions. Both departure points offer easy access to West Maui’s best whale watching and snorkeling spots.

We recommend bringing:

  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Swimsuit and towel
  • Sunglasses and hat
  • Reusable water bottle
  • GoPro or waterproof camera
  • All snorkel equipment is provided. If you have gear that is comfortable, please bring it – no sense in fitting another set that may not be as comfortable for you.

During whale season (December to April), sightings are very common. While we can’t guarantee a specific encounter, West Maui is one of the best whale-watching locations in Hawaii, and sightings occur on nearly every tour.

Yes! We follow eco-friendly and sustainable practices, educating guests about marine life and ocean conservation. Our crew uses reef-safe products and operates under NOAA whale protection guidelines to ensure a respectful wildlife experience.

Absolutely! This is a family-friendly tour suitable for children and first-time snorkelers. Life jackets and flotation devices are available for all ages.

The West Maui Whale Watch & Snorkel Tour typically lasts around 3 hours, including kayaking, whale watching, and snorkeling time.

We do have a limited amount of RX lenses. Please ask about this when you reserve your tour.

While we don’t have a hard and fast rule, we tend to cap our tours at ten guests. This being said, many people are mixed up on days and arrive for their tour on the wrong day or even the wrong location. We understand and will do our best to accommodate. Your on vacation, we understand.

What Our Customers Say

This was an absolutely amazing tour and the South Pacific Kayak team is phenomenal. Before our tour, Roger reached out and made recommendations for the best time of day to book. (0715 is a best!) Tyler was our guide during our adventure and he really made it special. I can’t speak highly enough, 10/10 recommend!

Good tour. 2 seat kayaks. Amazing snorkeling at turtle town. Didn’t have clear skies so we weren’t able to go to caves. Rabbit was a good guide. I would go again.

Had a great time. Madison was an awesome guide. Came face to face with beautiful green sea turtles and a host of other sea life. Reef was excellent, visibility was good and it was a wonderful morning. Madison gave some great tips for breakfast in Kehai. Thanks.
